Antiperspirant for excessive sweating
An antiperspirant is pretty much regarded as the first line of treatment for those who suffer with excessive underarm sweating.
Most people assume that an antiperspirant is the same as a deodorant but they are in fact two different things.
A deodorant helps to reduce and eliminate odour when you do sweat, whereas an antiperspirant will actually keep you from sweating. They are applied to the surface of the skin so are referred to as a topical treatment for sweating.
The main ingredient of an antiperspirant is aluminium salts. These salts dissolve into the moisture on the surface of the skin and form a gel that creates a temporary ‘plug’ on and around the sweat gland and in the pores just below the skin’s surface.
This covering prevents sweating and stays in place until they are washed away.
For some, regular over-the-counter antiperspirants are not strong enough to control sweating, in which case a General Practitioner may prescribe a stronger one.
These antiperspirants contain aluminium chloride which can cause a mild irritation, itching or stinging sensation when applied. The answer to this is to use the antiperspirant less frequently or to use emollients instead of soap to keep the underarm moisturised. Not so useful if you are an excessive sweater.
Although effective, antiperspirants only provide a temporary solution to excessive sweating and the commitment to using them eventually becomes too much or they prove ineffective.
The permanent solution to excessive sweating
If you are at this stage, then you may wish to consider the miraDry procedure.
miraDry provides a permanent solution to excessive underarm sweating as it addresses the underlying cause by destroying the glands that produce the sweat and odour.
Patients have described the procedure as ‘life changing’ – a strong statement but one that will resonate with those who have endured years of the physical and emotional impact of excessive sweating.
