In general, there are two patient types who express an interest in a lip enhancement procedure.
Category 1 – patients who have asymmetry (unevenness) between the top and bottom lip or have lost volume due to the ageing process
Category – 2 – patients who wish to increase the overall size of their lips purely for aesthetic purposes
Here we focus on Category 1 patients who have generally lost volume and balance to their lips due to the ageing process.
Yvette Newman of Absolute Aesthetics is a qualified Nurse injector. She has been using hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers to restore, plump, balance and hydrate lips since 2002.
When treating the lips and peri-oral area (around the mouth), Yvette stresses that it is important to assess each patient individually before deciding which particular product to use, how much product to use and which part of the lips would be best suited to treatment.
Lip enhancement for age related volume loss
Patients who have naturally lost volume to their lips will find that their lips have become thinner and small creases have formed above and below the lips.
These little lines are sometimes referred to as ‘smokers lines’ although smoking is not always the primary reason for their formation.
As we age and start to lose skin elasticity, the lips become thinner and a loss of skin volume can cause the lips to form these small creases around them.
The most effective way to treat this is to use a soft filler to the outline of the lip (also known as the vermilion border of the lip). This will put back the definition that has been lost through the ageing process. It is a very subtle, yet very effective way of rejuvenating the lip and peri-oral area without increasing the lips in size.
This rejuvenation technique will also help to turn up the corners of the mouth which produces an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
What to expect
As with all aesthetic procedures, a consultation is carried out to ensure the patient is suitable for treatment.
The consultation will focus on a medical history being taken, an explanation of the product to be used and an assessment to ensure that expectations are realistic.
A topical anaesthetic cream is applied for approximately 30 minutes before treatment. Each syringe of the hyaluronic acid dermal filler contains a small amount of lidocaine which helps to numb the area being treated.
Following treatment, a cool pack is applied to the lips as it is not uncommon to experience post treatment inflammation.
Patients are given a post-treatment care sheet and an appointment is made to review the results after a two week period.
Absolute Aesthetics uses Restylane hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. All new patients must have a consultation prior to any treatment taking place.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are non-permanent and the effects will gradually and naturally wear off between 8 to 12 months post treatment. In the event that a patient is not happy with their results, it is possible to safely dissolve the product.
